‘Mowgli’: Andy Serkis Crafts A Darker, Murkier ‘Jungle Book’ Tale [Review]

In Hollywood, where original ideas are an endangered species, the race against time in delivering your formula is always a critical factor. For every “Capote” there’s an “Infamous,” for every “Braveheart,” there is a “Rob Roy“—aka the lesser, after-the-fact and often-ignored, second version of the same movie that arrives in theaters too late and yet too soon following its predecessor. There are simply no prizes in Hollywood for second place and in the history of such dueling movie projects, the film that arrives first nearly always wins the battle, questions of quality be damned. Director/actor/mo-cap master Andy Serkis‘ “Mowgli: The Legend Of The Jungle,” a live-action, motion-capture adaptation of Disney‘s “The Jungle Book” falls squarely into this category and arrives with bad narrative baggage attached to boot.

Disney beat Warner Bros. to the punch in 2016 with Jon Favreau‘s successful, crowd-pleasing and nearly $1 billion-grossing “The Jungle Book” and Serkis’ project, already running late, was delayed. And then delayed again and then WB, nervous, running the numbers and realizing their doom, no matter how good their movie may be, sold the picture to Netflix who don’t have to bear the burden of splitting theatrical distribution costs and expensive nationwide marketing (“Mowgli” will, however, have a limited theatrical run). So, no matter what, “Mowgli,” arrives in the shadow of Favreau’s film and what can only be described as ‘Jungle Book’ fatigue, perhaps even live-action Disney adaptation fatigue (see ‘The Nutcracker‘).

The fact is, Serkis’ film, which is nearly impossible to discuss without at least some comparison to 2016’s “The Jungle Book,” given their recent proximities and similar styles, is better, but that doesn’t mean either movie is a masterpiece. It’s a purposefully darker, more mature movie and it’s mo-caption’d animation—that likely benefited from the delays—are much more realistic than the live-action CGI of Favreau’s picture. And the PG-rated “The Jungle Book,” a bit more pandering to the original 1967 Disney animated film, including using many of the same sentimental songs, was enjoyable, but sometimes goofy and slight. But darker, scarier and more adult PG-13 rating isn’t inherently better either.

Admittedly, there’s fatigue in just writing out the same familiar synopsis, but here goes nothing. “Mowgli” follows the story of the titular little boy (Rohan Chand) in India. His parents killed by the ruthless tiger Shere Khan (Benedict Cumberbatch), the baby is left for dead until the empathic black panther Bagheera (Christian Bale) rescues him and brings him to pack leaders Akela (Peter Mullan) Nisha (Naomie Harris) and the wolves in the jungles of India. Bristling against the laws and codes of the jungle that decry man as an evil outsider—he is accepted into the wolf pack by the by the animals of the jungle as one of their own at the protest of Shere Khan, who vows to finish off “the man cub.” Under the tutelage of Bagheera and the bear Baloo (Andy Serkis), as he grows to a young boy, he is taught the rules of the jungle and prepares for his a wolfhood rite of passage. But as Shere Khan, grown angrier and more bitter over the years, begins to threaten Akela, the wolf pack and their leadership in the jungle, the animals must decide whether keeping Mowgli around outweighs the greater good or send him back to his own kind. From there a moral and violent struggle over this potentially sacrilegious decision against the laws of the jungle ensue and Mowgli must come to terms with his identity.

While the story varies and hews closer to Rudyard Kipling’s original ” The Jungle Book” collection of stories than the animated Disney movie it is based on, most of the same greatest hits of the tale are included: Mowgli is stolen by the monkeys (though Serkis version is notably missing the King Louie orangutan character and the entire subplot of helping him attain fire); Mowgli comes across the mysterious, hypnotizing python Kaa (Cate Blanchett), though she’s far less evil in this version; and Mowgli eventually has his big showdown with Shere Khan.

But the devil’s in the details and the details are slightly different. Like Kipling’s original version, Mowgli is captured by the men in the village and becomes kept and tamed by a trophy hunter (Matthew Rhys). There’s also much more time spent with the wolf pack, his training rituals and such before forging out on his own, but this might be splitting hairs.

“Mowgli,” is simply darker, akin to a “Lord Of The Flies“-esque tone (arguably one of the original YA tales), but arguably murkier and mirthless because of it. Chemistry lacks too. Much like Favreau’s “The Jungle Book,” the boy of the story is the weak link. Chand is serviceable, but doesn’t quite spark the necessary empathy to make “Mowgli” a memorably moving tale. Bale seems miscast—as much as one can miscast a voice/mo-cap actor anyhow—and no one delivers as much joy as Bill Murray‘s version of Baloo can. Mulan’s Akela is utterly dead serious too which drives home some of the grimmer sensibilities of the movie.

Taken on its own merits, “Mowgli,” is an admirable and fairly engaging little adaptation of “The Jungle Book” tale that may find the most truck with tween-y Young Adult readers who want a little bit more bite and realism in their narratives. But even its shadowy aesthetic may prove to be uninviting and it just doesn’t possess that dynamic spark that makes or breaks these kinds of movies. It’s likely too forbidding for children and too unattractive for adults that likely already sat through this story less than two years ago with their already-immensely-pleased children. Where does that leave “Mowgli?” Perhaps unfairly buried under the layers of a Netflix algorithm one supposes, perhaps due for a reevaluation on its own terms in some years after the silhouette of its antecedent has faded. ‘xXx 3’ Writer Joins Growing List Of People Hired To Adapt ‘Gears Of War’ Video Game As A Feature Film

Video game films have a terrible track record. From laughable messes such as “Super Mario Bros.” to honest efforts to transcend the genre, such as “Assassin’s Creed” and “Tomb Raider,” there has yet to truly be a great videogame film. Universal hopes to change that with their adaptation of the popular Xbox game “Gears of War.”

The Wrap reports that writer F. Scott Frazier has been hired to tackle the highly-anticipated adaptation. “Gears of War” tells the story of a group of soldiers forming the resistance against the Locust Horde, creatures that emerge from beneath Earth’s surface and want to take over the world. Think beefier Space Marines from James Cameron’sAliens” with even bigger guns.

READ MORE: ‘Green Hornet’ Star Jay Chou To Join Vin Diesel In ‘xXx 4’

Now, the good news for fans of “Gears of War” is that Universal is still moving forward with the project after optioning the rights a couple years ago. The slightly unsettling news is that Frazier isn’t the first guy hired to tackle the film. A decade ago, Stuart Beattie was hired to pen the film for director Len Wiseman before that fell apart. And just last year, Shane Salerno was hired to script “Gears of War.”

But now, we have Frazier, and frankly, his filmography leaves us a bit cold on the prospects for this film. The writer’s previous works leave a lot to be desired, as he’s probably best known as the man who scripted the films “Collide” (the oft-forgotten action film starring Nicholas Hoult and Felicity Jones) and “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage,” the third film in the superspy/extreme sports franchise starring Vin Diesel.

Sure, there are fans of ‘xXx,’ as box office receipts (particularly in China) will attest. However, no one is mistaking that film as particularly good. It’s your typical stupid action film with an illogical plot, silly one-liners, and over-the-top action set pieces. Honestly, that sounds like it could make for a fairly enjoyable “Gears of War” film. But don’t go thinking that this Xbox adaptation is going to change people’s minds about videogame movies. That being said, Vin Diesel is exactly the type of person who should star.

There’s still no release date for the film, as “Gears of War” is still in the early stages of development. But fans can rejoice in knowing that it is moving forward.

‘Welcome To Marwen’ Trailer: Probably The Most Feel-Good Film About Being Brutally Beaten By Neo-Nazis Ever Made

The marketing campaign for Steve Carell and director Robert Zemeckis’ new film “Welcome to Marwen” has been a bit confusing, to say the least. The first trailer, released back in June, failed to garner much interest as it turned a true story about a man being beaten within an inch of his life by a group of neo-Nazis into some sort of light-hearted romp with toys. The second trailer, only a few weeks later, changed it up, to put a more serious, prestige film vibe on the Christmas release. But now, with the third attempt at a trailer, the marketing team ends up sending mixed messages, yet again.

READ MORE: 56 Must-See Films: The 2018 Fall Movie Preview

The third trailer for “Welcome to Marwen” once again tells the basic plot for the film. Carell plays Mark Hogancamp, a man who was brutally beaten by a group of neo-Nazis and is suffering from severe PTSD and memory loss. To help cope with this newfound status in life, he adopts a new hobby, creating a miniature world called Marwen, which is populated by dolls inspired by the folks in his real life.

“Welcome to Marwen” is inspired by a true story, which was also adapted into a truly great documentary titled “Marwencol” (definitely check it out). The story is definitely uplifting, in some ways, but ultimately, it’s a fairly dark tale about a man’s survival in the face of truly horrible circumstances. But somehow, Zemeckis has turned the story into what appears to be a “Toy Story”-esque adventure with a healthy dose of melodrama. Is it a serious prestige film with Oscar dreams? Is it a light-hearted, feel good film about hope and strength? Or maybe it’s both? At this point, your guess is as good as ours.

Ultimately, when juggling a serious story with a very unique take, the only hope we have is that the film keeps to a tone and runs with it. “Welcome to Marwen” has the potential to be a great film, with a crew of incredible actors. But it also has the potential to be a bit of a mess. Fingers crossed.

“Welcome to Marwen” hits theaters on December 21.

Here’s the synopsis:

When a devastating attack shatters Mark Hogancamp (Carell) and wipes away all memories, no one expected recovery. Putting together pieces from his old and new life, Mark meticulously creates a wondrous town where he can heal and be heroic. As he builds an astonishing art installation—a testament to the most powerful women he knows—through his fantasy world, he draws strength to triumph in the real one. In a bold, wondrous and timely film from this revolutionary pioneer of contemporary cinema, Welcome to Marwen shows that when your only weapon is your imagination…you’ll find courage in the most unexpected place.

‘Happy As Lazzaro’ Trailer: Breakout Cannes Film From Alice Rohrwacher Is Another Netflix Awards Contender

A lot has been made about Netflix’s fall slate of awards-contending films. Primarily, films like “Roma,” “Bird Box,” and “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” are brought up as serious prestige films that could make noise during awards season. But let’s not sleep on the Cannes award-winning film “Happy as Lazzaro.”

Netflix released the first trailer for “Happy as Lazzaro,” which debuted to critical acclaim earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival, winning the Best Screenplay honors. The film follows the titular young man as he works and lives among the people on an estate known as Inviolata. But then, as you will no doubt see in the film, time and space sort of fade away as Lazzaro’s actions seem to defy the laws of physics and time. Make no mistake, “Happy as Lazzaro” fits firmly into the genre of fable.

READ MORE: ‘Lazzaro Felice’: Alice Rohrwacher’s Evokes Timeless, 1960s Cinema [Cannes Review]

‘Lazzaro’ comes from writer-director Alice Rohrwacher. The Italian filmmaker doesn’t have a massive filmography, with “Happy as Lazzaro” being only her third narrative feature film, but she has already made waves as one of the biggest names in international cinema. Her previous two films both were selected for Cannes and she’s gone on to receive numerous awards and nominations throughout the years.

Many are predicting that “Happy as Lazzaro” could be a contender in this year’s awards season, serving as a bit of a foreign-language darkhorse behind the powerhouse that is “Roma.” Audiences will be able to see for themselves, as “Happy as Lazaaro” hits select theaters and Netflix on November 30.

Here’s the synopsis:

In the transfiguring and transfixing third feature from Alice Rohrwacher (The Wonders), we find ourselves amid a throng of tobacco farmers living in a state of extreme deprivation on an estate known as Inviolata, with wide-eyed teenager Lazzaro (nonprofessional discovery Adriano Tardiolo) emerging as a focal point. Although this all seems to be taking place at some point in the past (as implied by the warm grain of Hélène Louvart’s 16mm cinematography), a stunning mid-movie leap vaults the narrative squarely into the present day and into the realm of parable. In a fable touching on perennial class struggle with Christian overtones, Rohrwacher summons the spirit of Pasolini, while also nodding to Ermanno Olmi and Visconti.

‘Blade Runner’ Anime Series Being Developed For Adult Swim & Crunchyroll

Even with the critical acclaim received, “Blade Runner 2049” didn’t necessarily set the box office world on fire when it hit theaters last year. Combined with its massive price tag, the financial disappointment of ‘2049’ seemingly ensured that the sci-fi franchise would be put on the shelf yet again. However, thanks to Adult Swim and Crunchyroll, the “Blade Runner” universe is getting a fresh start in animation.

Variety reports that Adultswim and Crunchyroll are set to produce and distribute a brand-new animated series inspired by “Blade Runner” and ‘2049.’ The new series, titled “Blade Runner — Black Lotus” will consist of 13 episodes and will be set in the year 2032. Though the details of the exact plot are being kept quiet (would you expect anything else from this franchise?), it is reported that familiar characters from the established franchise will show up in some capacity.

“I first saw ‘Blade Runner’ in 1982, at age 11,” said Jason DeMarco, SVP and creative director of Adult Swim on-air. “It has remained one of the defining films of my life. To be able to explore more of this universe, with the incredible talent we have on board, is a dream come true.”

Sae Whan Song, head of business development for Crunchyroll, said, “’Blade Runner’ is a seminal work, and its influence permeates the genre. Adult Swim shares our excitement to bring this new series to fans, and we’re looking forward to building on this franchise together.”

Adult Swim will distribute the English-dubbed version of the series worldwide, minus Asia. And Crunchyroll will have the worldwide streaming rights to the series. Both companies are divisions of WarnerMedia.

‘Black Lotus’ will have some serious talent behind the scenes, ensuring that this “Blade Runner” spin-off is not just a simple cash grab. Directors Shinji Aramaki and Kenji Kamiyama will be on board for each of the 13 episodes. They’re perhaps best known for working on the upcoming “Ghost in the Shell” reboot. And famed “Cowboy Bebop” mastermind Shinichiro Watanabe will serve as a creative producer. Watanabe has dabbled in the sci-fi franchise before, as the writer and director of the short film “Blade Runner Black Out 2022,” which was one of the anime short prequels to ‘2049.’

There’s no release date as of now for ‘Black Lotus.’

The Russo Brothers Deny Any ‘Avengers 4’ Changes Due To ‘Guardians 3’ Being Put On Hold

The anticipation for any sort of “Avengers 4” news is at a fever pitch right now. We are still 6 months away from the sequel’s release, but due to the unprecedented secrecy surrounding the new film (we don’t even have a title yet), fandom is all in a tizzy, desperate for any nuggets of information. That’s why last night’s special screening (courtesy of Collider) of “Avengers: Infinity War” was such a highly-anticipated event. No, not because it’s another chance to check out 2018’s biggest movie in a theater (though, that’s a definite plus). Instead, all eyes were on the Q&A with directors Joe and Anthony Russo that happened after the film.

READ MORE: Stan Lee Reportedly Filmed ‘Avengers 4′ Cameo Already & Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige Reacts To The Sad News

Sadly, there was no news about “Avengers 4.” No, not even a title or a date for the trailer. At this point, it’s clear that Disney and Marvel Studios is screwing with us, right? Maybe we should expect “Avengers 4” to be the final title and no trailer, huh? Regardless, the directing duo did give some additional insight into ‘Infinity War’ and revealed just how the seemingly impossible task of combining everyone in the MCU into one film was accomplished.

Thanks to Peter Sciretta over at /Film (doing the Lord’s work), we have a blow-by-blow account of the questions and answers from last night’s screening. One of the more interesting answers came when the Russos discussed the scripting process for ‘Infinity War.’ Originally, the first draft of the film was very different than what was presented on screen. The draft clocked in at 250 pages (or roughly 4-ish hours, by common script practices) and featured narration from Thanos. The film would have also been non-linear in structure, with multiple flashbacks, including an origin for the Black Order aka Thanos’ henchmen/”children.”

READ MORE: Joe Russo Says ‘Avengers 4’ Is Currently 3 Hours Long & The Stakes Are “100% Higher” Than ‘Infinity War’

The directors also talked about the surprise appearance of the Red Skull, as the guardian of the Soul Stone. They revealed that the Red Skull was always the planned character for that scene, but they originally wanted actor Hugo Weaving to reprise his role from “Captain America: The First Avenger.” The Russos wouldn’t reveal why he turned down the role, but they ended up hiring actor Ross Marquand.

It was also revealed that Joe and Anthony Russo were thinking about including the Netflix characters in the film, but the complications surrounding making those ‘Defenders’ characters transition from the small screen to ‘Infinity War’ were too much to make work.

READ MORE: Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige Updates ‘Guardians 3’ Status & Confirms ‘Avengers 4’ Trailer By End Of 2018

Moving on to the climax of ‘Infinity War,’ the Russo Brothers revealed that the character they wanted to save most from the Snap was Spider-Man. However, given that Peter Parker’s “death” at the end of the film is regarded as the most emotional of the group, it’s clear that the director’s did the right thing by making sure he turned to dust.

And finally, the Russos refuted Dave Bautista’s claims that “Avengers 4” could change due to ‘Guardians 3’ being put on “indefinite hold.” The directors said that nothing has changed in “Avengers 4” in light of the James Gunn firing because the film was already shot before the dismissal occurred.

“Avengers 4” is scheduled to come out May 3, 2019. Who knows, maybe we won’t get a trailer before then?

‘Roma’ Wins Best Picture From The New York Film Critics Circle

The New York Film Critics Circle announced their 2019 year-end awards today and crowned Alfonso Cuarón’s “Roma” Best Picture.  The Netflix and Participant Pictures release also took Best Director (Cuarón) and Best Cinematography.  Out of all the organization’s winners, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” was the biggest surprise as the Sony Pictures Animation title won Best Animated Film.

A24’s “First Reformed” won both Best Actor (Ethan Hawke) and Best Screenplay (Paul Schrader) for “First Reformed” duplicating their wins at the Gotham Awards on Monday night.  The mini-major’s “Eighth Grade” also was in the winner’s circle again as Bo Burnham earned Best First Film.

“Support The Girls'” Regina Hall might seem like a Best Actress surprise but both her jury selected Gotham and Independent Spirit Award nominations are indicators of significant critical and industry support.  Another Regina, Regina King, in this case, took her second Best Supporting Actress honor for Barry Jenkins’ “If Beale Street Could Talk” after winning the same award from the National Board of Review on Tuesday.  “Can You Ever Forgive Me’s” Richard E. Grant earned the Best Supporting Actor honor.

Perhaps fully aware they would award “Roma” Best Picture, the NYFCC bestowed Best Foreign Language Film to Pawel Pawlikowski’s “Cold War.” Best Documentary went to “Minding The Gap” which also won earlier this week at the Gotham Awards.

For those who see the NYFCC as a potential foreshadowing of a Best Picture win, it should be noted the last time AMPAS and NYFCC picked the same film was “The Artist” in 2011.  They have only duplicated four times this century.

A full list of this year’s winners is as follow:

Alfonso Cuarón / Roma

Best Screenplay

‘Swimming With Men’ Exclusive Clip: Synchronized Swimming Has Never Been So Cringeworthy & Hilarious

There have been plenty of films that tackle the very real issue of a mid-life crisis. Normally, those films feature men buying sports cars, getting a fake tan, and perhaps a younger significant other. However, in the new IFC Films release “Swimming with Men,” when Eric goes through his mid-life crisis, he decides the best way to tackle this time in his life is by doing something different — joining an all-male synchronized swimming group.

And in honor of the film’s impending release in theaters and VOD, we are lucky enough to present an exclusive clip from the film that shows the sheer “skill” on display by this group of swimmers. Sure, the folks in attendance at this party aren’t super impressed by the slightly uncoordinated effort, but these men sure do have heart!

As you can see from the exclusive clip, “Swimming with Men” isn’t attempting to be the most serious film of the season. If it wasn’t obvious by the synopsis, the film is definitely going for that off-beat humor, with a heavy dose of fully-intended cringe.

“Swimming with Men” stars Rob Brydon, Rupert Graves, and Thomas Turgoose. The film is directed by Oliver Parker, who is probably best known for his films “Dad’s Army,” “Dorian Gray,” and “Johnny English Reborn.” The comedy is written by Aschlin Ditta.

“Swimming with Men” hits theaters and VOD on December 7.

Here’s the synopsis for the film:

His job is a drag, his wife may be cheating on him, and he’s not getting any younger. Accountant Eric (Rob Brydon) is simply treading water when he discovers a newfound sense of purpose thanks to an unexpected source: a group of similarly stuck-in-a-rut guys who have found camaraderie and self-worth through synchronized swimming. Sure, they may be a bit paunchy, but they’re determined to prove they have what it takes to be a whirling, twirling, scissor-kicking aquatic dream team. And they’ve set their sights on the ultimate prize: the world championship. Showcasing the sharp wit of The Trip series’ Rob Brydon, Swimming With Men is a big-hearted, delightfully offbeat ode to answering your calling, no matter where you are in life.

‘Kong: Skull Island’ Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts To Direct Sega Vs. Nintendo Series Produced By Seth Rogen

Back in 2014, it was reported that Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg were interested in making a film about the long feud between Sega and Nintendo. However, since then, news about the film has been non-existent. But now, thanks to a new report, we know the project has been retooled as a limited series with a brand-new director attached.

Variety is reporting that “Kong: Skull Island” director Jordan Vogt-Roberts has been signed on to direct a limited series based on the novel “Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo, and the Battle that Defined a Generation” by author Blake J. Harris. The new series will follow Sega’s rise in popularity in the early-90s as the video game rival of the massive Nintendo.

The duo of Rogen and Goldberg are still involved in this new iteration of the project, serving as producers. The pilot episode of the series will be written by Mike Rosolio. Rosolio is probably best known for his work on a couple episodes of “American Vandal” and “Sean Saves the World.” However, he also has been hired to write the upcoming ‘Sesame Street’ film.

Vogt-Roberts, as mentioned, is probably best known for the surprisingly good “Kong: Skull Island.” However, before that he helmed “The Kings of Summer” and episodes of FX’s “You’re the Worst.” He’s also been heavily involved in the long-in-development video game adaptation “Metal Gear Solid.”

On Instagram, Vogt-Roberts confirmed the ‘Console Wars’ news and said, “Teaming up with [Seth Rogen] and a bunch of amazing people to bring this to life. Such a dream project filled with amazing stories and characters that defined my youth.”

There’s no release date set for ‘Console Wars.’

Travis Scott Shares Adorable Videos Of Baby Stormi Watching Him On-Stage

We haven't seen many photos or videos of baby Stormi. The child of Travis Scott and Kylie Jenner has intentionally been hidden from the media spotlight, with the pregnancy kept a secret until the day the child was born on Super Bowl weekend. But we are slowly-but-surely getting to see the baby more, including in a pair of social media videos courtesy of Scott which show the little bundle of joy bouncing up-and-down to her dad's music.

The extremely cute Instragam videos came courtesy of Travis Scott's own page. While Kylie Jenner and Scott have started to become a little more open about showing their baby to the public and the media, these videos are among the rare instances we've seen of baby Stormi just being herself. The footage appears to be backstage at one of Scott's recent concerts promoting his latest album, Astroworld, and Stormi can be seen smiling, bopping her little head and grooving to her dad's music as he performs to a live, sold-out concert. It sounds like Stormi is already a fan of Scott's jams.

While fans might be used to be random paparazzi photos of baby Stormi, these intimate phone-captured social media videos of Travis Scott's child shows us an adorable little look at a joyous moment in the baby's young life. Seemingly unaware that she is being filmed, she's dancing and enjoying her dad perform his music to a live, attentive crowd.

Should we get more updates from baby Stormi's perspective in the future, CinemaBlend will keep you posted.

There are rarely any days when we don't get an update from someone in the Kardashian and Jenner clan. But considering how little attention we've seen to Baby Stormi, beyond some unusual nail tributes and the very, very expensive purses she's expected to receive once she gets older, we have not gotten too many newsbites from the famous baby. But this video may hint at the public seeing more from Kylie Jenner's first child.

Meanwhile, Travis Scott announced yesterday that the Astroworld festival, which was recently held in Houston on November 17th, is expected to return sometime next year-- sparking a potential all-day annual concertgoing experience. 40,000 fans were in attendance to see Scott, Post Malone, Young Thug, and Little Wayne perform. Houston is Travis Scott's hometown, and he wanted to host this festival in order to bring more "recognition" to the city.

When we get more updates from baby Stormi -- as well as her parents, Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott -- CinemaBlend definitely keep you posted on the latest info and updates. It's very clear the media outreach these two celebrities have, and it's apparent that they are feeling more comfortable about showing their young child in nice, relaxed moments such as the ones seen in the videos above. There is no shortage of updates to come from them.

CinemaBlend will keep you posted about the newest and freshest developments in film, television, music, video games, pop culture.

Shania Twain Is 'Fed Up' With Lack Of Diversity In Country Music

Shania Twain is "fed up," ladies and gentlemen. Specifically, the country music star doesn't care in the least for the lack of diversity in her music genre, and she has a lot to say about it too. To be blunt, she finds herself "bored" by the male-dominated scene, and Twain wants it to change immediately.

Shania Twain's vocal criticisms about the strong lack of diversity in the world of country music were made when she met with E! News' Carissa Culiner to promote her series, Real Country, which premiered on Tuesday on USA Network. Having been involved in this particular genre of music for a good bit of time, she continues to notice the difference between the number of men and the number of women who perform and become famous for country. Twain, therefore, wants to encourage more women to pick up a guitar and make their mark in country music, and she wants to make them feel inspired.

But she's not simply encouraging young women only. Shania Twain wants women of all ages, backgrounds, and ethnicities to be involved in country music. Because as Twain sees it currently, it's a genre dominated by men. The singer also believes now is the time for more women to get themselves in the action and make sweet tunes. So long as you are a "human being," Twain wants you should be welcomed into the world of country. She doesn't think it should remain so restricted.

Hopefully, Shania Twain's call to arms will inspire more musicians to get involved in the male-dominated country genre. There is, admittedly, a reputation of country music being stereotypically male; Twain wants to break away from those norms and produce a wider array of country lovers. Hopefully, musicians will feel inspired by what Twain said and get themselves inside the country scene. They should, at least, expand their horizons.

For more updates and developments in music and pop culture, as well as in film, television, video games and a whole lot more, you should check back in with CinemaBlend to hear the latest scoop.

Kevin Smith Explains Why Ben Affleck Won't Speak To Him Anymore

For years, Kevin Smith and Ben Affleck appeared to be as close as Hollywood friends could be. They made movies together -- six, in fact, and that's not even counting Smith's involvement with Daredevil. They swapped stories about each other regularly, and they appeared to be extremely chummy. But those days silently faded away not long ago, and it wasn't entirely clear what happened. Well, Smith believes he's the one to blame for the dissolve of their public friendship. To be more specific, the writer/director blames his "big mouth," claiming he might've shared one story too many about them.

The honest confession came from Kevin Smith (obviously) on Twitter. While Kevin Smith is usually open and honest about many things, especially on social media (maybe to a fault), his fractured relationship with Ben Affleck was something that rarely comes up. It wasn't entirely clear what went down. Was there a fight? Were insults thrown? Well, when someone on the social media site asked Smith upfront why they don't talk anymore, the filmmaker gave the above extremely honest answer.

It's hard when friendships fade. And since this is a private matter, we don't know for sure Kevin Smith and Ben Affleck stopped being buddies. In fact, Smith might not be completely sure either. It's possible that with everything going on in Ben Affleck's life -- from the rise of his directing career, to the fallout of his marriage, to his much-discussed role as Batman, to his stint in rehab -- that he is focusing more on himself than his friends. But considering that Affleck is still (seemingly) BFFs with Matt Damon, one assumes that the cold shoulder Affleck extended to Smith was personal.

It's a bummer for fans, but Kevin Smith is seemingly accepting the blame here. It's hard to have consistent expectations when you are friends with an A-list celebrity, but it sounds like Smith thinks his own mouth is the reason for the divide. Smith apparently shared one too many secrets with the hungry public about Ben Affleck's life, and that didn't sit well with The Accountant star.

If Kevin Smith is going to keep divulging personal information to the masses, then perhaps Ben Affleck won't feel comfortable sharing too many things with the prolific podcaster. Especially during this current vulnerable time in his personal life.

While Kevin Smith doesn't seem to be happy about his broken friendship with Ben Affleck, he doesn't sound defeated either. Rather than beat himself up, Smith is accepting his part in their feud, and admitting that these are the consequences of speaking out so publicly. So while both filmmakers are working regularly, Ben Affleck and Kevin Smith likely won't work together again anytime soon.

Kevin Smith and Ben Affleck first became friends in the '90s around the rise of their respective careers. Smith was instrumental in helping Good Will Hunting be seen by the masses, and Affleck appeared in a number of films directed by Smith. Those include Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Jersey Girl and a brief appearance in Clerks II, which was the last Kevin Smith movie to feature the actor. Smith was also the one who championed Affleck for the part of Daredevil, which didn't go over too well. In fact, that film lead to Affleck meeting his wife, Jennifer Garner.

The Rocksteady Studios Superman Rumor Is Back Once Again

Now, obviously, the first thing most people did was test for trolling. When it comes to news like this a lot of people want to be sure that some random troll from the far side of the world didn't log into the database and the game just to get a rise out of people. According to IGN, however, adding games to the Game System Requirements database is no hop, skip and jump, and adding titles to the website that are not confirmed, approved, or announced, is no easy task. In fact, gamers tested this by searching up games such as Grand Theft Auto VI, which has not been announced but has plenty of rumors about its announcement. Sure enough, there are no entries for GTA VI or GTA 6 or any variant of the title. There are entries for GTA V, however.

Fortnite Has Passed A Huge Milestone

While Fortnite first gained popularity because of how unique its Battle Royale mode is (only a handful of games do it well), it's risen to the top of the pile largely due to the support Epic has poured into the game. The map is constantly changing and being updated with clever Easter eggs, activities and more. Weekly updates introduce new content, rewards, cosmetics and game modes, while regular patches address any bugs or other issues at a breakneck pace. It also doesn't hurt that the game is available on just about every platform known to man. So, Epic keeps giving players reason to come back for more and, based on these latest figures, that effort is paying off.

Minecraft: Story Mode Is Now Available On Netflix

The first three episodes of Minecraft: Story Mode have launched on Netflix, allowing viewers to experience an adventure with a branching path where the viewer makes decisions about what happens next.

Developed by Telltale Games, Minecraft: Story Mode for Netflix is basically a retelling of the first season of the game that launched on consoles back in 2015. Instead of controlling the characters, though, the viewer will be limited to making binary decisions throughout each episode, which will have an impact on the evolving narrative. The first three episodes are available now, with the final two due to launch on Dec. 5.

This is certainly an interesting way of experiencing a story, with folks simply being prompted when they need to make a decision for the characters to follow. Oh, and you can totally choose a male or female protagonist before watching the season.

When a decision needs to be made, Gameinformer reports you'll input your decision via buttons if you're watching on a console, with a mouse if you're watching on a computer or with a touchscreen press if you're watching on a smart device. If you're watching through a device like the Fire TV, then you'll use the remote to make your selection.

The Netflix version of Minecraft: Story Mode features the same voice cast as the game, including Patton Oswalt, Paul Reubens, Catherine Taber, and Ashley Johnson.

This actually isn't the first time Netflix has ventured into "choose your own adventure" territory, as they have similar branching-path shows based on Puss in Boots (from the Shrek films) and Buddy Thunderstruck. While those were more targeted at youngsters, Minecraft boasts a tale pretty much anyone can enjoy. Word on the street is that a similar episode of Black Mirror is in development, which is probably the most fitting property for something like this. Chances are pretty high that, no matter what choices you make, the conclusion will make you feel like an absolute monster for engaging with technology. I love Black Mirror and all, but no way in hell would they pass up this golden opportunity to say to the viewer, "Look what you did! Look what your terrible choices led to!"

As for Minecraft: Story Mode, its launch is a bit bittersweet, as it's likely the final project to ever come out of the team at Telltale Games. The developer spent the last decade making some fantastic games set in the worlds of Batman, Borderlands, Guardians of the Galaxy and more, with a sudden closure this fall resulting from financial issues. Around 250 employees were fired without notice, with a small staff kept on to finish work on Minecraft for Netflix. The final season of The Walking Dead was at the midway point at the time, but the project has been shifted over to Fireside Games, along with much of the original staff, to be completed.

Darksiders 3 Review: Whip It Good

I found myself becoming increasingly concerned through the first few hours of Darksiders III. The crumbling city environments are initially repetitive and a bit boring, enemies felt too similar and Fury's combat prowess left much to be desired. On top of that, there was little in the line of narrative to motivate my actions and the game suffered from bizarre load freezes and headache-inducing framerate issues.

I've waited six years for the Darksiders series to return, so I'm happy to report that all of those issues were addressed to at least some degree the further I got into the game. That's obviously not ideal, but those willing to trudge through a weak opening are rewarded for their dedication. Darksiders III is kind of like an old chainsaw tucked away in the back of a shed. It may take a while to rev up but, once it does, it manages to get the job done.

As Fury, one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse, you are tasked with hunting down and capturing the personifications of the Seven Deadly Sins in order to restore balance to the world. This all comes after your brother, War, allegedly kicked off the end of days earlier than planned, so the tale takes place before either Darksiders or Darksiders II, if I've got my chronology correct.

If you haven't played the previous games in the series, the good news is that you don't have to worry about missing out on much (outside of the fact that they are fantastic games and you should absolutely play them). The team at Gunfire Games said early on that they were more focused on gameplay than story in this outing, and they certainly delivered on that promise. Kind of a bummer, but at least you don't have to worry about being totally lost from a narrative standpoint. That's not to say there aren't some decent story beats along the way, just that you'll be spending far more of your time whacking demons and angels with a whip than trying to uncover the truth behind the apocalypse and whether or not Fury is being deceived by Heaven, Hell and everything in between.

The Darksiders series has always worn its inspirations on its sleeve, with the first two games cribbing openly from The Legend of Zelda. Darksiders II plugged in some additional RPG elements like crafting, stat management and open maps, helping distinguish the series a bit more from the adventure games it was so clearly influenced by. Rather than continue to build on that formula, Darksiders III instead takes several steps back in order to become a straight hack-and-slash game that was clearly fueled by a love for Dark Souls.

The map is comprised of several large areas connected by tunnels aplenty and many, many smaller locales. This makes for a much more linear experience, though there are plenty of secrets tucked away and entire branches of maps you could miss completely if you aren't keeping a sharp eye out. Once the action moved into caves and crumbling crypts, my issues with the framerate and the bizarre loading became less of a problem. Things seem to have improved further following a day-one patch, so here's hoping the lingering issues can be ironed out through additional support .

Shortly after her first tussle with Wrath, Fury is introduced to the Lord of the Hollows. Along with making Fury question her mission and the motivations of those she serves, this towering plot point grants our hero her first Hollow, an elemental form that offers a handful of useful new abilities. The first Hollow gives Fury a secondary attack boasting flaming flails, as well as a new traversal ability to jump higher than before. It also grants her a couple of new moves to unleash in battle, making it a pretty versatile upgrade.

This is when the combat in Darksiders III starts to take shape and, by the time you've got another Hollow or two to aid in both combat and traversal, the game starts to really find its groove.

The environments never really wow, but they're varied enough considering the fact they are all set within the same area of a demolished city. The cast of characters is pretty small, but the performances are solid and the shallow story was just intriguing enough to keep me invested.

As for the baddies you'll be beating the stuffing out of, they become increasingly diverse the further you dive into the dilapidated structures and tight corridors, with each of the six or so major zones offering some new twists to master in terms of both combat and making your way around the map.

As noted above, Darksiders III is heavily influenced by Dark Souls, so even the weakest enemies can do some serious damage to Fury if you're not paying attention and learning their attack patterns. Most encounters become fast and furious balancing acts between well-timed dodges and attacks and, while you'll occasionally be battling the camera as much as your enemies, the end result is a satisfying romp. The weapons you get from Hollow forms help keep the proceedings varied so, again, the further into Darksiders III you get, the more tools you'll have at your disposal.

When I look at Darksiders III as a whole, the end result is a game with a lot of heart that never quite lives up to its ambition. Whether it's due to limited resources or the fact that this game very nearly never saw the light of day is unclear but, in the end, this third outing never rises to the level of the games that came before it.

At the same time, Darksiders III still manages to be a heck of a lot of fun once it shakes off the cobwebs and the combat opens up. And after playing so, so many open world epics these past few years, I find its more focused approach to be something of a relief. While many will understandably fault Darksiders III for being scaled down in many ways, I was content to go on an adventure that has a set path, only a few attributes to level up and minimal customization/resources to manage. There were enough moving parts to keep me engaged without ever making me feel overwhelmed and the adventure's 20-hour runtime kept me entertained without having Fury and her pals overstay their welcome.

Darksiders III is a relic of the past suffering from an identity crisis but, despite its faults, it manages to deliver a fun and frequently challenging experience for genre fans to hack and slash their way through. It's not the triumphant return devotees of the series were hoping for, but it's still a serviceable continuation.

Jedediah Bila Returns To Fox News Channel As Contributor

Fox News Channel has signed Jedediah Bila as a contributor. News comes little more than a year after Bila exited ABC’s The View.

“We are excited to welcome her back to the Fox News family,” FNC’s SVP  of morning programming and talent development Lauren Petterson said in making the announcement.

Bila noted FNC is the place she started her TV career, first joining as a contributor in 2013, appearing regularly on Outnumbered and The Five.

Most recently, Bila served as co-host of ABC’s The View, as a recurring guest co-host in Season 19 and an official co-host of the show’s 20th season.

In September of ’17, the conservative voice on the show announced on The View that day would be her last, to gasps heard in the audience.

She didn’t give a specific reason for her departure but said she is writing a book and is working on other projects. “This has just been an amazing journey, and I appreciate all of you. I want to thank the viewers, even the ones that write me hate tweets,” she told her co-hosts and the audience.

The sudden announcement came days after The View‘s Hillary Clinton interview, in which Bila put some tough questions to the former Presidential candidate, reportedly leaving some staff concerned about how Bila handled the interview.

During her run on ABC, Bila secured an exclusive interview with embattled Dance Moms star Abby Lee Miller ahead of her 366-day prison sentence. The interview, which was presented in a Lifetime special entitled, Abby Tells All, earned praise.

Hulu Snags Dr. Ruth Docu In Fast Sundance Pick Up; Magnolia To Distribute

One day after the Ask Dr. Ruth documentary was unveiled as one of the high-profile premieres at 2019 Sundance Film Festival, turns out the Ryan White directed pic has a very therapeutic fest afterlife with Hulu and Magnolia.

The now Disney-dominated streamer will air the docu on the famed sex therapist and Holocaust survivor next year after Sundance concludes. Additionally, with Magnolia as a distributor, Ask Dr. Ruth will also receive “the widest theatrical release for a Hulu Documentary to date,” according to the home of The Handmaid’s Tale. A move that means they are putting Netflix and others on notice in the race for the Oscars

Which is A-OK with Dr. Ruth Westheimer herself.

“I’ve never really stopped to examine my life, so when I first saw Ask Dr. Ruth even I was amazed by what had transpired during my ninety years,” said the film’s subject today in an additional statement. “I am delighted that audiences will be able to share that experience both on Hulu and in movie theaters around the U.S.”

“The remarkable journey that led Dr. Ruth Westheimer to become the cultural icon she is today is a story that demands to be told,” Craig Erwich, Hulu’s SVP of Originals added. “Ask Dr. Ruth tells the untold story of strength, perseverance and the constant quest for knowledge against all odds, and we can’t wait to share this incredible film with audiences.”

“I’ve been filming Dr. Ruth for the past two years and I can barely keep up with her,” said White. “At 90, she’s still a force to be reckoned with. It’s an honor to collaborate on her incredible life story.”

Ask Dr. Ruth is produced by Delirio Films. As well as directing, Ryan White serves producer with Rafael Marmor, Christopher Leggett and Jessica Hargrave. Peggy Drexler is executive producer.

BTW – In case, you really want to see Ask Dr. Ruth ASAP, the Robert Redford created fest runs from January 23 to February 3, 2019.

Kristen Stewart To Star In The New Film ‘Happiest Season’ From Writer-Director Clea DuVall

For those film fans worried that Kristen Stewart is forgoing the indie scene in favor of more big-budget work, thanks to the upcoming “Charlie’s Angels,” never fear. Stewart’s latest project plants her firmly back in her dramatic comfort zone.

Variety is reporting that the actress has signed on to star in the upcoming film “Happiest Season.” The film tells the story of a young lesbian couple on the cusp of taking the next step in their relationship. As one woman (Stewart) plans on proposing to her girlfriend at a family holiday party, things get complicated when its revealed that her partner hasn’t yet come out to her very conservative family.

READ MORE: Kristen Stewart Says New ‘Charlie’s Angels’ Will Be “Super-Woke” And Feature “No Objectification Whatsoever”

“Happiest Season” comes courtesy of co-writers Clea DuVall and Mary Holland. DuVall will perform double-duty on the film, serving as the film’s director, as well. DuVall is probably best known for her acting roles, but in recent years, has stepped behind the camera.

Back in 2016, the writer-director helmed her debut film, “The Intervention,” which received acclaim after it’s debut at that year’s Sundance Film Festival. However, even with that success, “Happiest Season” will mark the biggest project in the young filmmaking career of DuVall.

As mentioned above, Stewart is currently busy filming “Charlie’s Angels,” which is the latest reboot of the popular film and TV franchise. Joining Stewart in the cast are Naomi Scott and Ella Balinksa. Elizabeth Banks is also on board to star and direct.

2019 looks to be a big year for the actress. In addition to the highly-anticipated ‘Angels,’ Stewart will star in the films “Underwater” and “Against All Enemies.” This year, she was seen in “Lizzie,” and the unreleased festival film “Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy.”

Can The Political Drama ‘Vice’ Succeed At The Box Office Despite ‘The Front Runner’ Failure?

Lost in the shuffle of prestige films making strong debuts and massive studio films breaking records is the interesting, and downright terrible, box office run of Jason Reitman’sThe Front Runner.” The film, which stars A-lister Hugh Jackman, tells the story of the political scandal surrounding ‘80s Presidential candidate Gary Hart. And frankly, the box office results, thus far, for the film point to a sizeable flop for Sony. However, the real question that remains is why “The Front Runner” has failed, and what it might mean for the upcoming politically-charged Oscar contender “Vice.”

But before we tackle the Adam McKay and Christian Bale drama, let’s take a deeper dive into the box office performance of Hugh Jackman’s film. “The Front Runner” has all the makings of a sure-fire fall hit film. A-list star? Check. High-profile director? Check. Interesting/relevant story with a message? Double check. So, what went wrong?

READ MORE: ‘The Front Runner’: Hugh Jackman & An Impressive Ensemble Navigate Scandal [Telluride Review]

Well, first the timing of the film’s release seems to be questionable. Sony decided to play off the recent US mid-term elections and release the political drama on the same day as voting. When the film failed to produce big numbers, many analysts just wrote the totals off as a misfire in scheduling. Perhaps, people were too busy voting to go see the film? But what happened next seems to defy logic.

That first weekend, after debuting on a Tuesday, only produced a Per Theater Average (PTA) of $12,886 in 4 locations. That’s just a dismal number when you take into account the sheer star power involved. To put that in perspective, the Japanese film “Shoplifters” (with hardly any marketing, no recognizable stars, and subtitles) earned $17,853 PTA in 5 locations in its recent debut.

The following weekend was even worse, as “The Front Runner” expanded to 22 locations and only earned a $3,426 PTA. Ouch. And that brings us to this past weekend. The Hugh Jackman film got its widest release yet, at 807 locations nationwide, and earned a PTA of $783. Nope, I didn’t miss a comma. That’s seven hundred and eighty-three dollars.

READ MORE: ‘The Front Runner’: Director Jason Reitman On Prescient Politics, Hugh Jackman, Charlize Theron & More

Okay, but maybe, just maybe, people weren’t aware that Hugh Jackman had a new film in theaters? That’s unlikely, as the star has been doing all the major publicity rounds, appearing on numerous TV shows and on social media. The trailer has been a fixture at theaters in recent weeks, as well. And yes, the film has gotten mixed reviews, so far, but when has that ever stopped people going to see a Hugh Jackman film?

So, what’s the issue with “The Front Runner” and why should “Vice” be concerned? Well, there could be one explanation that connects both films and could lead to a lower box office total for “Vice” than what people are expecting. It could be that the reason why “The Front Runner” did poorly can be chalked up to pure political fatigue.

READ MORE: ‘Vice’ Reactions: Christian Bale, Amy Adams & An “Exceptional” Movie Point To A Surefire Oscar Contender

With the current political climate so divisive and toxic, fueled by headlines and social media being dominated by Donald Trump and whatever he said now, there’s just a healthy portion of the population that doesn’t really want to sit and “escape” with a film focused on yet another political scandal involving a Presidential figure.

Unfortunately, that’s basically what “Vice” does as well, except focusing on the highly-controversial political career of former Vice President Dick Cheney (played in the film by Christian Bale). Even though it’s hard to imagine a more politically divisive time than now, back in the early-2000s, when Cheney and George W. Bush were running things in the White House, the country was still pretty divided. And while, from all accounts, Bale, director Adam McKay, and the rest of those involved in “Vice” do superb jobs (leading many to consider it an Oscar front-runner), is the public really ready to sit down and watch two more hours of content that will likely enrage them?

READ MORE: ‘Vice’: Adam McKay Talks Trump Vs. Cheney & Christian Bale Explains Why He Wasn’t Allowed To Meet The Former VP

However, unlike “The Front Runner,” “Vice” does have a couple advantages. Adam McKay and Christian Bale are at the top of their respective games, which means that “Vice” will have significantly more awards buzz than “The Front Runner,” perhaps making the film a “must-see” for film fans. Not only that, but “Vice” has a Christmas release date, which provides a bit of a buffer from the recent elections and is a time when many people go and see films.

That being said, if film fans are sick of political films in this divisive time, we could be looking at another major prestige film underperforming at the box office this year. We’ll just have to wait and see.

“The Front Runner” is in theaters now. “Vice” opens on December 25.

Donald Glover & Director Hiro Murai Snuck Off And Filmed A Secret Movie With Rihanna & Letitia Wright

Is there anything we can tell you Donald Glover that would surprise you? Not only is he one of the biggest musical artists of the moment, but Glover is a jack of all trades and an accomplished writer-director-actor that is probably best known for his incredible FX series “Atlanta.” So, it really shouldn’t be any surprise that Glover just went ahead and snuck away to film an entire movie with one of the biggest stars in the world and no one had a clue.

READ MORE: ‘Deadpool’ Creator “Mourns The Loss” Of Donald Glover Animated Series

Over the weekend, while performing at his Pharos festival, Glover, who also goes by the name Childish Gambino, surprised fans with an exclusive peek at an upcoming film called “Guava Island” (via GQ). Apparently, the film is already completely filmed and in post-production with director Hiro Murai aboard as helmer. Not only that, there’s even a trailer. Albeit recorded in a less-than-legal fashion by an attendee (which you can watch below).

As if a new film starring Glover and directed by Murai wasn’t enough to get you excited, the supporting cast looks to be truly incredible, with Rihanna (yep, as in the massive music star), Letitia Wright (fresh off “Black Panther”), and Nonso Anozie (who was recently seen in the new trailer for Disney’sArtemis Fowl”) along for the ride.

READ MORE: Donald Glover Says ‘Atlanta’ Season 3 Will Be Accessible, Compares It To Kanye West Album

No synopsis or anything is officially available, but judging by the trailer, “Guava Island” looks to focus on a man (Glover) living in a Caribbean resort community, who is trying to make it as a musician but runs into trouble along the way. Rihanna looks to play his love interest in the film. “Guava Island” looks to carry that same ability that Murai and Glover have shown in “Atlanta” to ride that line between drama and comedy, with a dash of thriller thrown in for good measure.

Again, since there’s no official word on the film, there’s no release date at this time. But judging by the two-minute trailer, “Guava Island” is definitely a film we’ll keep an eye out for.

Sony Already Working On Sequel & Female-Centric Spin-Off For ‘Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse’

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” hasn’t even been released yet, and Sony is already banking on the film’s ultimate success by beginning work on a sequel and a brand-new spin-off.

According to THR, Joaquim Dos Santos has been hired to direct the sequel to ‘Into the Spider-Verse.’ Dos Santos is probably best known for his animated work on series “Avatar: The Last Airbender” and Netflix’sVoltron.” Both of those shows have been fan-favorites and universally acclaimed. It makes sense why he’d be brought on to navigate the further adventures of Miles Morales, aka the animated Spider-Man.

However, a sequel (which was inevitable, honestly) isn’t the really shocking news. Also as part of the report is news that Sony is hard at work on a new animated spin-off of ‘Spider-Verse’ that will focus on multiple female ‘Spider’ characters. Bek Smith, who has written episodes of CBS’ decidedly not-animated series “Zoo,” is on board to pen the untitled film.

While details of the spin-off are still unclear, it’s likely the female-centric ‘Spider-Verse’ film will focus on Spider-Gwen, who apparently gives a scene-stealing performance in the upcoming film. However, considering the Spider-Man Marvel lore is chock full of strong female characters such as Spider-Woman, Silk, Madame Web, and Spider-Girl, the full roster of characters should be stacked. And if Spider-Gwen is the featured character, we can probably expect actress Hailee Steinfeld to return to the role.

As for additional behind-the-scenes help, the report says that Chris Miller and Phil Lord, who spearheaded ‘Into the Spider-Verse,’ are expected to have creative input on the films but no official deal has been reached. Amy Pascal, who is the producer of all the ‘Spider-Man’ film projects, is obviously back on board to produce these films. And yes, Avi Arad will probably return to, and with him, some interview gold, no doubt.

It appears that Sony is ready to grab the bull by the horns, so to speak, on this new animated franchise. With early buzz being extremely positive, and awards talk building, it looks like the studio will have a massive hit on its hands with ‘Spider-Verse.’ And if that’s the case, the studio that two-for-two on Spider-Man spin-off films in 2018 (“Venom” is still crushing at the box office), which not many people would have predicted.

Emily Blunt & Lin-Manuel Miranda Sing Their Hearts Out In Two New Songs From ‘Mary Poppins Returns’

Mary Poppins Returns” has large Disney shoes to fill, if it wants to be favorably compared to the classic original film. The sequel to 1964’s “Mary Poppins” seems to capture the spirit of the original, with its mixture of animation and live-action, a healthy dose of fun and whimsy, as well as its own fair share of musical numbers. And it’s those musical additions to the franchise that fans might be most anxious about.

In anticipation of the film’s Christmas debut and the soundtrack’s release in a couple weeks, Disney has released two full songs from the upcoming film. The songs in “Mary Poppins Returns” has to live up to some serious classic tunes found in the original. Songs like “A Spoonful of Sugar” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” have transcended the film and become staples in pop culture. Now, Disney hopes that “The Place Where Lost Things Go” and “Trip a Little Light Fantastic” can capture the hearts and minds of filmgoers around the world.

The first song, “The Place Where Lost Things Go” is performed by “Mary Poppins Returns” star Emily Blunt, who takes over the role made famous by Julie Andrews. While it’s difficult to judge the merit of the song completely out of context and without the visual accompaniment, it’s obvious that Blunt is bringing her A-game to her vocals and delivers a beautiful performance.

The other song, “Trip a Little Light Fantastic” comes from “Hamilton” mastermind Lin-Manuel Miranda, who stars in ‘Returns’ opposite Blunt. However, don’t go expecting a rap song about everyone’s favorite nanny. Miranda turns in a song that has the same voice you know and love from his time on Broadway, but with a decidedly British sound.

As mentioned, “Mary Poppins Returns” hits theaters on December 19, and the soundtrack, which is going to be a big hit, no doubt, will arrive on December 7.

Ava DuVernay Signs Massive $100 Million Exclusive Deal With Warner Bros. TV

Ava DuVernay has also flirted with Warner Bros. in the past. The acclaimed filmmaker is working on a big-budget adaptation of the DC comic “New Gods” for the studio, as well as a couple of TV projects. But now, thanks to a new, massive deal, DuVernay can officially make Warner Bros. her home. At least for the TV side of things.

Today, the studio announced that DuVernay signed a multi-year deal with WBTV worth a reported $100 million. That deal ensures that WBTV will be the exclusive destination for all of DuVernay’s various TV-related projects, including drama and comedy series, specials, documentaries, and digital content.

“I’ve had nothing but beautiful experiences working with Peter Roth, Susan Rovner, and Brett Paul. They love and support artists in wonderful and nourishing ways,” said DuVernay (via Deadline).

She continued, “They work within a traditional studio headed by Kevin Tsujihara that is stirring with untraditional energy and fresh protocols for intentional, inclusive image-making. Warner Bros. is a terrific partner about matters of visibility and belonging for all kinds and cultures of people, which is our mission at Forward Movement. I couldn’t be happier to call Warner Bros. TV my production home.”

Peter Roth, Warner Bros. TV Group President and Chief Content Officer, said, “Ava DuVernay is one of the leading lights in our industry, a brilliantly talented writer, producer, director and entrepreneur whose ability to inspire with her art is exceeded only by her ability to entertain. We have had the great pleasure of working with her on ‘Queen Sugar’ and ‘The Red Line,’ and we are extremely excited about the new stories she has to tell.”

Unlike a deal with Netflix, Apple, or Amazon, DuVernay’s deal with WBTV means that her content can land on any number of networks or streaming services, which can be seen as an added bonus. Also, since this covers only her TV projects, the deal doesn’t infringe on any of her film work, which includes the aforementioned “New Gods.”

The filmmaker has already produced TV projects with WBTV, including “Queen Sugar” on OWN and the upcoming CBS limited series “Red Line.” In addition to her new deal with WBTV, there’s still a couple project for Netflix that DuVernay is finishing work on without Warners. Those projects, the “Central Park 5” series and the upcoming Prince documentary, are expected to be released sometime in 2019.

‘Green Book’ Wins Best Film Of 2018 From National Board Of Review

The always mercurial New York-based National Board of Review (you too can be a member!) announced their year-end honors as Peter Farrelly’s “Green Book” took the celebrated Best Film honor. The organization also showed its love to “A Star is Born,” however, as Bradley Cooper’s hit took Best Director (Cooper), Best Actress (New York native Lady Gaga) and Best Supporting Actor (Sam Elliot). “If Beale Street Could Talk” was the other notable winner as it won both Best Supporting Actress (Regina King) and Adapted Screenplay (Barry Jenkins).

“Green Book’s” Viggo Mortensen also took the honor for Best Actor while “First Reformed’s” Paul Schrader took Original Screenplay.

As always, however, NBR tends to have notable snubs. The organization lists its top 10 films as well as top 10 independent films and notable omissions on both lists include “The Favourite” (they have a longtime issue with Fox Searchlight although “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” and “Old Man and the Gun” made the cut this year), “Widows,” “Vice,” “First Man,” “Private Lives” and “BlacKkKlansman.” The lack of respect for Spike Lee‘s Cannes winner is just as jaw-dropping as the snub for “The Favourite” or its three celebrated performances.

Additionally, NBR turned some heads by choosing “Cold War” as Best Foreign Language Film over “Roma” although Alfonso Cuaron’s passion project did make the top 10 films of the year list.

Some historical context for those who believe “Green Book’s” win might vault it to the top of the Best Picture race. The last NBR winner to win Best Picture was “Slumdog Millionaire” in 2009. Only three NBR winners have won Best Picture since 2000.

‘Venom’ Blu-Ray Trailer Leans Into The Meme & Fully Embraces The Eddie Brock/Venom Love Story

A strange, and fairly unpredictable, thing happened as “Venom” was released in theaters back in October. Sure, comic book fans ate it up, as expected. But there is a significant amount of fans that read between the lines a bit more than your average filmgoer and noticed that running throughout the superhero film is a love story. But not the one you expected. You see, many saw the box office hit as a romance between Eddie Brock and the symbiote living inside him. And now, Sony is using that to help market the upcoming Blu-ray release.

If you do a Google search for “Venom shipping,” you’ll notice something really interesting. As mentioned, the Sony superhero film has developed this cult following in the LGBTQ community of fans that are obsessed with “shipping” Venom with Eddie Brock, played by Tom Hardy. “Shipping,” of course, is the slang term for pairing them together as romantic love interests. Some even call “Venom” the first true queer-friendly superhero film.

And in honor of this unlikely pairing, Sony has released a tongue-in-cheek trailer for the upcoming home release of “Venom,” offering a holiday love story for the ages. It’s amazing how a film’s story and tone can be completely turned on its head with the right music, clever editing, and title cards ripped straight from “Love, Actually” or any other holiday rom-com. And you know what? It really works.

LISTEN: Unpacking ‘Venom’: Secret Success, Or A Turd In The Wind? [Podcast]

At The Playlist, we have debated the shortcomings of this film quite a bit. (I still say it’s dumb fun, even though I hate using the term “dumb fun” for films. But nevertheless, the term is appropriate here.) But this new trailer might be just the thing to turn those “Venom” haters into converts, as it really could be seen as the great love story of 2018.

Move over Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, “Venom” is here to steal hearts all around the world. And if the recent box office news is any indicator, fans are ready for some serious symbiote/human love.

Aubrey Plaza To Host 2019 Independent Spirit Awards

Film Independent announced the host of the 34th Independent Spirit Awards this morning and, surprise, it was not a third go-around of celebrated duo John Mulaney and Nick Kroll.  Instead, former Spirit Award winner Aubrey Plaza will take the reins of entertaining the intoxicated guests at the annual soiree in Santa Monica.

Best and Worst of the 2018 Spirit Awards: “Get Out,” Greta Gerwig, Elisabeth Olsen

In a statement released by Film Independent Plaza remarked, “I am truly honored and delighted to host the Spirits Awards this year. It is a dream come true to host a show that celebrates my greatest loves… independent film, the people that make them possible and live television!”

Film Independent President John Welsh added, “The search for a great Spirit Awards host is never easy. This year we said, let’s find someone funny, smart, a cinephile, being a great actor wouldn’t hurt, and it would be an added bonus if they’ve previously won a Spirit Award. Then we realized, oh wait, that’s Aubrey Plaza! So thank you Aubrey, for hosting the Spirits!”

IFC will once again broadcast the ceremony live and the networks Executive Director Blake Calloway noted, “As the awards season slogs to the end, let’s raise a glass to the infectious enthusiasm that only Aubrey Plaza will bring to this party.”

Besides Kroll and Julaney, previous Spirit Awards hosts have included Kate McKinnon and Kumail Nanjiani (fantastic), Fred Armisen and Kristen Bell (disappointing), Patton Oswalt (a shocking misfire), Andy Samberg (knocked it out of the park), Joel McHale (forgettable), Sarah Silverman (irreverant) , Samuel L. Jackson (fine), Eddie Izzard (didn’t read the room), Queen Latifah (long time ag0) and John Waters (Spirits show favorite), among others.

Plaza won a First Feature Film Spirit Award for “Ingrid Goes West” and was also nominated for Best First Screenplay. She currently stars in the critically acclaimed series “Legion” which will return for a third season on FX in 2019. Her next big screen effort will be Lars Klevberg’s remake of “Child’s Play” where she’ll star opposite Brian Tyree Henry. That film opens in theaters on June 21.

With the Academy of Motion Picture Sciences and ABC still mum on a potential Oscar host (or hosts) this news opens the door slightly that Kroll and Mulaney could jump to the mothership of all awards shows. Their lack of international recognition doesn’t help their chances, but you can still hold out hope.

The 2019 Independent Spirit Awards will aired live on IFC at 2:00 pm PT/ 5:00 pm ET on Saturday, February 23.
