Taika Waititi Isn’t Here For Your “Female Thor” Talk As He Clarifies What Natalie Portman Will Be Known As In ‘Love & Thunder’

In a flurry that saw 10 projects announced in under two hours, Marvel Studios blew the minds of fans in Hall H over the weekend, while giving people a glimpse at what Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has in store. And one of the most shocking aspects of the announcement is that Natalie Portman is back in the upcoming “Thor: Love and Thunder,” but instead of playing the love interest, she’s inheriting the hammer and becoming the Goddess of Thunder.

But please don’t call her “Female Thor.”

As has been seen on social media and in articles about the news, people have been using the term “Female Thor” to describe the character that Portman will become. However, according to Taika Waititi, he would prefer another term for the character.

The director was watching the discourse over how to distinguish Chris Hemsworth’s Thor from Portman’s version. And when someone tried to explain why “Female Thor” was appropriate, the director chimed in.

“Correction. She’s called Mighty Thor,” replied the director.

Now, before people start thinking that Waititi has invented that term and is trying to push some sort of gender argument, it’s important to recognize that the comic books that originate the story of Jane Foster inheriting Mjolnir and becoming a hero are called “Mighty Thor” and in interviews and discussions, the writer of the series, Jason Aaron, has always said that the character is called Mighty Thor and not She-Thor or Female Thor or Jane FosTHOR. Just plain Mighty Thor.

The other big question surrounding ‘Love and Thunder’ and Portman’s involvement in the film is how far Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige had to go to get the Oscar-winning actress back on board after she took a long hiatus from Marvel projects. According to the boss, it doesn’t seem like it was very difficult.

“She’s amazing, she’s always stayed in contact with us,” said Feige (via ET).

The Marvel boss said it took very little convincing to bring Portman back and “when Taiki had this idea and pitched it to her, she was in right away.”

Those excited to see Portman as Mighty Thor will have to wait until “Thor: Love and Thunder” arrives on November 5, 2021.
