‘Nailed It!’ Breaks Into Emmys With Nom For Outstanding Competition Program As ‘Project Runway’ Streak Ends

Given the Television Academy’s tendency to reward the same critical favorites year after year at the Primetime Emmy Awards, it’s often difficult for newer series to break into the race—particularly, in the category of Outstanding Competition Program. This year has proven to be an exception, with Netflix’s Nailed It! bringing new blood to a category that is typically locked up.

Returning for its third season shortly before the Emmys’ eligibility cut-off, Nailed It! replaced perennial Emmy favorite Project Runway, ending its 14-year streak of nominations in the top category.

Arriving on Bravo in 2004, Project Runway had earned consecutive nominations for each of its first 14 years on the air. The fashion show’s snub comes as it underwent a revamp in its return from Lifetime to Bravo for its first season following the departure of its popular hosts, Tim Gunn and Heidi Klum, who are developing a new series at Amazon.

in an intriguing wrinkle, Nailed It! is produced by Magical Elves, the same  company that produced the most recent season of Project Runway on Bravo. (Magical Elves also had produced Project Runway‘s initial seasons that aired on Bravo before the show relocated to Lifetime.)

Hosted by comedian Nicole Byer, Nailed It! follows a group of amateur bakers who are asked to recreate edible masterpieces throughout a series of challenges, vying for a $10,000 prize. In the top reality competition category, it will fo against reigning winner RuPaul’s Drag Race as well as The Amazing Race, American Ninja Warrior, Top Chef and The Voice.

Over the past 10 years, the Outstanding Competition Program has been dominated by just 9 series, including Drag Race, The Amazing Race, American Ninja Warrior, Top Chef, The Voice, Project Runway, Dancing with the Stars, American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance.

Somewhat of a surprise entrant to this year’s Emmys, Nailed It! beat out a sizable crop of new reality series—including ratings and pop culture juggernaut The Masked Singer as well as  Making It,The Titan Games and The World’s Best—to advance to television’s biggest night on September 22.
