Janelle Monáe Set To Replace Julia Roberts As Lead In Amazon’s ‘Homecoming’ Season 2
Despite a trio of Golden Globe nominations earlier this year, for Best Drama Series, Best Actress, and Best Actor, Amazon’s “Homecoming” came away from the awards show with no trophies. And when the Emmy nominations were announced, the series came up empty again. However, that shouldn’t be an indictment of the series that stars Julia Roberts, as it received pretty great reviews and was regularly part of people’s top 10 lists. But as we know, even though the series is coming back, “Homecoming” will return without Roberts at the lead.
According to THR, it appears that Janelle Monáe has landed the coveted lead role on “Homecoming” Season 2, replacing an outgoing Roberts. No, that doesn’t mean the two are playing the same character, as the new episodes will spin-off from last year’s series and focus on a new story with new people.

Monáe is said to play a woman that is in a canoe but unaware of how she got there and who she is. The series is expected to continue the story of the Geist Group, which was introduced in the first season, but without Roberts and her co-star Stephan James. Obviously, the series will keep much of Season 2’s plot under wraps, as the reveals are all part of the series’ appeal.
Monáe is probably best known for her music career, but has been steadily building a strong filmography as an actress, appearing in films like “Hidden Figures,” “Moonlight,” as well as the upcoming films “The Lady and the Tramp” and “Harriet.”
“Homecoming” is created by Micah Bloomberg and Eli Horowitz, based on the podcast of the same name from the duo. There’s no anticipated release date for “Homecoming” Season 2, but considering production has yet to begin, 2020 is looking like the best bet.
