Instagram Outage Follows Disruption To PlayStation Network – Update

UPDATE at 5 PM PT:  It looks like Instagram is mostly back online for users. The site Down Detector shows the spike in complaints of no service has dropped. There has been no word from the company on what caused the outage, which caused upsets among influencers around the world.

UPDATED with company statement, some service restored. Instagram went down Thursday afternoon, with the outage quickly becoming the No. 1 trending topic on Twitter and sending frustrated Instagram users to other digital platforms to vent.

Visitors to Instagram on mobile or desktop devices have been greeted by an error message. The outage has been reported by users in various parts of the world, but the scope of the problem was not immediately clear.

In a tweet from its official handle, Instagram wrote, “We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing their Instagram accounts. We’re working quickly to fix the issue.”

According to the site Down Detector, the number of users reporting problems dropped dramatically in the 4PM hour PT as service started to be restored in some territories.

The disruption at Instagram did not appear to be affecting the functionality of its parent Facebook’s namesake social network, though it too has experienced disruptions in recent months. The tech giant blamed one such episode in March on a “server configuration change,” but said in a tweet at the time that its systems were “recovering” after the resolution of the glitch.

Based on Twitter messages in the early going, many Instagram users initially were uncertain if the cause of the problem was the service itself or their own wifi or internet connection.

The issues with Instagam followed closely after similar ones involving the PlayStation Network. Users were unable to sign in or access their accounts on the Sony-owned service.

“We’re aware that some users are experiencing issues logging into PSN,” the gaming platfom’s official account posted on Twitter. “Thank you for your patience as we investigate.”

A few hours after that message, an official PlayStation monitor indicated that things had returned to normal.
