‘Easy A’ Spin-Off Coming From The Original Film’s Writer Bert Royal

Looking at the history of the film “Easy A,” it’s evident just how much Hollywood has changed in the last 9 years since the Emma Stone comedy hit theaters. Led by the aforementioned actress, in her Golden Globe-nominated performance, “Easy A” earned more than $75 million worldwide on only an $8 million budget and catapulted Stone into superstardom. And yet, there was no sequel rushed into production. No TV series. No spin-offs. For 9 years, “Easy A” laid dormant. Until now.

Variety is reporting that “Easy A” is getting a long-awaited spin-off/sequel coming from original writer Bert Royal. No exact details about the plot are given, but the report says that the film will take place years later (obviously) in the same high school that saw Olive Penderghast don the persona of the school sexpot. It’s expected that Emma Stone will not return to reprise her role. Although, it would be fun to see how Olive turned out a decade later.

“Easy A” was originally directed by Will Gluck, but the untitled spin-off/sequel will be the directorial debut for Royal. The writer-director broke out thanks to his script for “Easy A.” After that, he went on to write episodes for the TV series “Gigantic,” and wrote/created the Freeform drama series “Recovery Road.”

There’s no word on when we might see this spin-off, but Royal is said to be still in the script-writing phase. 2020 would mark the 10th anniversary of the original film, and would serve as a great year to launch the new entry in the franchise. So, we’ll just have to see how it all transpires.
