Martin Scorsese Talks With Joanna Hogg About Their History & How He Got Involved With ‘The Souvenir’
There is nothing better than two incredible artists discussing their shared love of art. And in film, it’s always great when two filmmakers are able to not only discuss their own work, but give commentary on the state of the industry and films that stand out. That’s exactly what happens in the new A24 podcast with directors Martin Scorsese and Joanna Hogg.

At first, you may wonder why the director of films like “Goodfellas” and “Raging Bull” would find himself in a room with a British filmmaker known for her intensely dramatic films like “Archipelago” and the upcoming A24 release “The Souvenir.” Well, Scorsese is actually a fan of Hogg’s and is one of the executive producers on the latter film, as well as its forthcoming sequel.
For those that aren’t familiar with “The Souvenir,” Hogg’s film is a semi-autobiographical look at life in 1980s for a young female film student and an older, complicated man. It’s clear, once you watch the film, that Hogg poured her heart and soul into the work, which draws from much of the filmmaker’s own personal history. The film debuted as part of this year’s Sundance Film Festival and would go on to win the Grand Jury Prize in World Dramatic Cinema.

They also discuss the sequel, which is simply titled “The Souvenir: Part II,” and is going to feature much of the same cast of the first film, which includes Tilda Swinton, Honor Swinton Byrne (Tilda’s daughter), Tosin Cole, and Jack McMullen. However, the second part of the story will also include Robert Pattinson, in an unnamed role.
Even if you’re not familiar with Hogg’s work, the discussion between the filmmaker and colleague (and friend) Scorsese is worth the listen on its own.
