Jacki Weaver Responds To Anjelica Huston’s Snide Remarks About New Film ‘Poms’: “She Can Go F*ck Herself”
Yesterday, we reported about a new interview where Oscar-winning actress Anjelica Huston pulled no punches when talking about the #MeToo movement, specifically how it involved filmmakers Roman Polanski and Woody Allen. You would think that would be enough to get the film industry talking, but in fact, it was another off-hand comment that Huston made that seems to have struck a chord with actress Jacki Weaver.
“I’m looking for movies that impress me in some way, that aren’t apologetically humble or humiliating like, ‘Band of cheerleaders gets back together for one last hurrah,’ you know,” Huston said. “An old-lady cheerleader movie. I don’t like that kind of thing. If I’m going to be an old lady—and I’m sort of touching old lady these days—at least I want to be a special old lady.”

Well, for those that aren’t familiar with one of the new films coming to theaters soon, titled “Poms,” that might not be such a terrible quote. But for those paying attention, what Huston actually did was throw the upcoming Diane Keaton-starring film about a group of older women forming a competitive cheerleading squad under the bus. Of course, she didn’t name names, but clearly, Huston was throwing a jab at “Poms,” and one of the stars of said film, Weaver, was none too pleased.
“Didn’t she grow up in a castle in Ireland?” Weaver said in a new interview with Vanity Fair. “I can’t see her cheerleading. But then, I grew up in Australia, where there is just no cheerleading culture. I think the most interesting acting happens outside your comfort zone.”

When asked what she thought of the comments, the Australian actress replied, I just laughed. And then I said, ‘Well, she can go fuck herself.’ I was kind of disappointed. I had always been an admirer of Anjelica. And I thought, ‘That’s a bit mean and petty.’”
She added, “I would say she must be going through menopause, but she must have had that ages ago.”
You can read all of Weaver’s comments over at Vanity Fair, but overall, she took the comments in stride. Well, about as much as an actress would be able to when an Oscar winner craps all over your movie before it hits theaters.
For those interested in a movie about older ladies in a cheerleading squad, “Poms” arrives in theaters on May 10.
