‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ Final Trailer: More Epic Mayhem, Destruction & Pandemonium
Sometimes, people just like to see monsters smash stuff. It’s what earned “Godzilla” (2014) over $93 million in its opening weekend and what has prompted movies like “Kong: Skull Island” and “Rampage.” The upcoming Godzilla sequel “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” seems to built around one main idea – when it comes to monsters, the more the merrier.

The latest addition to cinema’s longest-running franchise sees Godzilla squaring off against a number of colossal fiends, including Mothra (a huge moth monster), Rodan (a gigantic pterodactyl creature), and King Ghidorah (an enormous, three-headed dragon and Godzilla’s arch-nemesis). There are even hints that more monsters may appear throughout the film. Needless to say, audiences are in for some mega-destruction.

Director Michael Dougherty will be taking the reins for this project. With his experience in superhero action films like “X2” and “Superman Returns,” as well as his horror films “Trick ‘r Treat” and “Krampus,” Dougherty will likely be able to provide the combination of tension and fantasy action that a Godzilla movie requires.

The film stars Kyle Chandler, who has previous monster movie experience in the 2005 “King Kong” reboot, and Vera Farmiga, who has proven herself to be quite comfortable in the horror genre with films like “The Conjuring” and the TV series “Bates Motel.” While both Chandler and Farmiga will likely provide strong, monster-movie-worthy performances, there is no doubt that it is Godzilla and his rogues’ gallery of monsters that will be the real stars.
The movie also features Millie Bobby Brown (TV’s “Stranger Things”), Bradley Whitford (“Get Out,” “The Post”); Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins (“The Shape of Water,” “Blue Jasmine”); Charles Dance (HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” “The Imitation Game”); Thomas Middleditch (HBO’s “Silicon Valley”); Aisha Hinds (“Star Trek Into Darkness”); O’Shea Jackson Jr. (“Straight Outta Compton”); Oscar nominee David Strathairn (“Good Night, and Good Luck,” “Godzilla”), with Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe (“The Last Samurai,” “Inception,” “Godzilla”) and Golden Globe nominee Ziyi Zhang (“Memoirs of a Geisha,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”).
Even after this film, the monster mash will likely continue, culminating in a “Godzilla vs. Kong” film in early 2020. But before he can fight King Kong, cinema’s favorite giant lizard has quite a few monsters to go through in this upcoming film.
“Godzilla: King of the Monsters” will storm onto screens on May 31.
