Celebrate National Pet Day & Watch The New ‘Secret Life Of Pets 2’ Trailer [Watch]

Nine films in and Illumination films has already made $6.2 billion worldwide and counting. Their “Despicable Me” franchise has already grossed $3,7 billion alone, and the company, whose films are distributed by Universal, are on the hunt for their next mega-million-dollar brand. They might have already found it in “The Secret Life Of Pets,” which was Universal’s highest grossing release of 2016 grossing $368 million domestic and a whopping $875 million worldwide. Not bad for a first time animated film with no existing I.P before. So, it’s probably no surprise Illumination rushed a new movie into theaters and three years later—they may hustle, but they don’t skimp details—the sequel is here.

Illumination’s tenth feature, ”The Secret Life of Pets 2,” could be another comedic blockbuster and Illumination would like to remind you the original had the biggest opening weekend ever for an original film, animated or otherwise ($104.3 million). Yep, the kids were drunk and smitten with this one before it even came out, apparently the idea of talking cats and dogs right up their sweet spot. Now, of course, this time, the main character is no longer voiced by Louie. C.K., his #MeToo moment got him bounced out of the film immediately, but surely kids won’t notice, care, or even knows who he is, right?

Replaced with Patton Oswalt, and packed with Illumination’s signature irreverence and subversive humor, this new chapter explores the emotional lives of our pets, the deep bond between them and the families that love them, and answers the question that has long intrigued every pet owner: What are your pets really doing when you’re not at home? Oh yeah, Harrison Ford is in this one too. Here’s the official synopsis:

Terrier Max (Patton Oswalt) is coping with some major life changes. His owner (Ellie Kemper) is now married and has a toddler, Liam. Max is so worried about protecting the boy that he develops a nervous tic. On a family trip to a farm, Max and mutt Duke (Eric Stonestreet) encounter canine-intolerant cows, hostile foxes, and a terrifying turkey, all of which only elevates Max’s anxiety. Luckily, Max gets some guidance from veteran farm dog Rooster (Harrison Ford, making his animated-film debut), who pushes Max to ditch his neuroses, find his inner alpha, and give Liam a little more freedom.

Meanwhile, while her owner is away, plucky Pomeranian Gidget (Jenny Slate) tries to rescue Max’s favorite toy from a cat-packed apartment with a little help from her feline friend, Chloe (Lake Bell), who has discovered the joys of catnip.

And crazy-but-cute bunny Snowball (Kevin Hart) gets delusions of grandeur that he’s an actual superhero after his owner Molly starts dressing him in superhero pajamas. But when Daisy (Tiffany Haddish), a fearless Shih Tzu, shows up to ask for Snowball’s help on a dangerous mission, he’ll have to summon the courage to become the hero he’s only been pretending to be. Can Max, Snowball, Gidget and the rest of the gang find the inner courage to face their biggest fears?

Maybe kids don’t care about voices, but man, that’s an all-star voice cast. Will “Secret Life Of Pets 2” break into the $1 billion category the way Illumination so clearly wants? It’s early to tell, but clearly, the studio has something big, at least, on their hands. “The Secret Life Of Pets 2,” opens in theaters June 7.
