Brie Larson Says She Filmed ‘Captain Marvel’ Post-Credits Scene Knowing Only Her Line & Without Any Context Or Co-Stars

As we approached tonight’s official release of the long-awaited “Avengers: Endgame,” fans have learned some of the ridiculous ways that Marvel Studios kept the secrets and twists to the film under wraps. Most of the time, this included not giving actors full scripts, instead just the scenes they were actually there to film. However, as Brie Larson, who plays Captain Marvel in the film, explained to Jimmy Fallon on the “Tonight Show,” during her first scene on set, they didn’t even give her a partial script. Instead, she just got one line.

“They gave me a piece of paper that was a full page of dialogue and action, but all of it was redacted except for my one line,” she recalled, as she described her first day on set. The secrecy was so crazy for ‘Endgame,’ she didn’t even know who was in the scene she was filming until she literally walked on set and saw the gathered Avengers.

But the confusion and half-truths didn’t start with ‘Endgame.’ During her time on “Captain Marvel,” she had to film the post-credits scene, aka “tag,” for the movie. And if you haven’t seen “Captain Marvel” by now, sorry, here’s the spoiler…

The tag features the Avengers gathered around Nick Fury’s cosmic pager, wondering what it’s doing and who it’s calling. That’s when Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, appears and looks at the superheroes and asks, “Where’s Fury?” Then the film cuts to black.

However, for the scene, there was no big set with tons of A-list Avengers present. Instead, Larson explains how the scene was actually shot, and how she honestly didn’t know where Fury was.

“I didn’t know that was the tag. I didn’t know what that was,” revealed Larson. “There was nobody else there. I was by myself on a green screen. I walked in, and they were like, ‘Just real quick, we’re just going to whip pan over to you and you’re gonna go, ‘Where’s Fury?'”

“They were like, ‘He’s…very gone.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, I think this means he’s…dead,’” she added.

The secrecy for both films seems to have worked. Larson’s “Captain Marvel” has already eclipsed $1 billion at the box office, and the latest ‘Avengers’ film is opening tonight, and early sales seem to indicate the team-up flick could reach that milestone by the end of its first weekend. Suffice it to say, Brie Larson is feeling pretty good about herself right now.

Here’s the post-credits scene from “Captain Marvel,” for those that want to see if they can spot the cuts and green screen work:
