The Criterion Channel Launches April 8 With David Lynch Retrospective & Other Streaming Gems

We are mere days away from the highly-anticipated launch of The Criterion Channel streaming service. On April 8, rising out of the ashes of FilmStruck, The Criterion Channel will begin to stream the very best classic and contemporary films that any true cinephile will enjoy. And in advance of its launch, we now have a very specific idea of what subscribers will have access to next month.

For those that didn’t follow the drama of 2018, after the sudden (and shocking) demise of the FilmStruck streaming service, filmmakers and fans were outraged and asking WarnerMedia for a new location for the library of titles that were found on the service. Enter The Criterion Channel, a new streaming service that includes the entire catalogs of the Criterion Collection, as well as Janus Films, featuring an ever-growing library of more than 1,000 feature films, 350 shorts, and 3,500 supplementary features, including trailers, introductions, behind-the-scenes documentaries, interviews, video essays, commentary tracks, and rare archival footage.

Films from Sony Pictures, Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM), Lionsgate, IFC Films, Kino Lorber, Cohen Media, Milestone Film and Video, Oscilloscope, Cinema Guild, Strand Releasing, Shout Factory, Film Movement, and Grasshopper Films all make appearances, as well as all the original content that was created for FilmStruck.

And as for April, in particular, The Criterion Channel has an extensive line-up of special programming that will make sure subscribers have plenty to keep them occupied, including “Columbia Noir” featuring eleven hard-boiled classics from Columbia Pictures; “Directed by David Lynch,” with four features and a selection of shorts; “Screenwriter: Suso Cecchi d’Amico,” a seven-film tribute; and another seven-film series on the extraordinary French actress Simone Signoret.

In addition to all that, The Criterion Channel boasts films from a who’s who of filmmakers including Chantal Akerman, Luis Buñuel, Jane Campion, Jean Cocteau, Joel and Ethan Coen, Carl Th. Dreyer, Federico Fellini, John Ford, Samuel Fuller, Jean-Luc Godard, Alfred Hitchcock, Shohei Imamura, Jim Jarmusch, Akira Kurosawa, David Lean, Mike Leigh, David Lynch, Kenji Mizoguchi, Mikio Naruse, Yasujiro Ozu, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, Kelly Reichardt, Susan Seidelman, Ousmane Sembène, Paolo Sorrentino, Jacques Tati, François Truffaut, Agnès Varda, Jean Vigo, Andrzej Wajda, Orson Welles, Wim Wenders, and Edward Yang.

Needless to say, this is a great service for those that miss FilmStruck and those that want a streaming alternative to Netflix and Hulu, that has a focus on incredible films of the past and present day.
