Netflix Is “Doubling Down” On ‘Bandersnatch’-Style ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ Projects

Late last year, Netflix surprised “Black Mirror” fans with a quick taste of Season 5, with the release of the film “Bandersnatch.” But this wasn’t any old “Black Mirror” episode. No, “Bandersnatch” utilized the fairly new “Choose Your Own Adventure”-style technology to allow viewers to make decisions for the characters and choose from multiple endings for the film. Speaking at a conference in India (via Variety), Netflix’s Vice President of product, Todd Yellin, discussed the company’s plans for “Bandersnatch”-esque projects in the future, and how they won’t be limited to the sci-fi genre.

He continued, “And it won’t necessarily be science fiction, or it won’t necessarily be dark. It could be a wacky comedy. It could be a romance, where the audience gets to choose – should she go out with him or him.”

It shouldn’t be too much of a shock that people reacted well to “Bandersnatch.” The production quality of the product was very high, with fans discussing the various branching storylines and outcomes. Plus, the fact that “Choose Your Own Adventure” products, most notably in books, have been popular for decades.

We’ll have to wait and see just how the technology is implemented in the future. Are we going to have a rom-com where audiences choose the suitor? Will there be a horror film where you can control where the hero goes when trying to escape? Those are just a couple of obvious routes to take, and we’re sure that the good folks at Netflix are going to come up with much better examples.
