‘Brightburn’ Extended Trailer: We See What Would Make A Superhero Kill In James Gunn’s Horrific Take On Superman

There are rip-off movies that copy other films due to their popularity, in an attempt to cash out and make a quick buck. And then there are films that are inspired by other works and take a story that has been done before but tweak it slightly into something new. The upcoming “Brightburn” is most definitely not a rip-off of the Superman mythology. Instead, it’s a tweak on the origin that leads to something very different.

And as seen in the new extended trailer for “Brightburn,” which is produced by “Guardians of the Galaxy” filmmaker James Gunn, we see what would happen if an alien child is left in the care of a loving family in rural Kansas. However, instead of the child growing up like Clark Kent and saving the world hundreds of times, Brandon Beyer is constantly picked on and humiliated, leading to the young man using his incredible powers for evil.

The extended trailer is very similar to the last trailer, except in the second half, the scenes showing Brandon using his powers to terrorize people have been slightly extended, particularly the scene in the diner. Overall, it looks like Gunn, along with his brothers Mark and Brian (who are the credited writers) and director David Yarovesky, has crafted a film that wears its Superman inspirations on its sleeve but wants to be something completely different.

“Brightburn” will hit theaters on May 24.

Here’s the synopsis:

What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister? In this horrific take on the classic superhero trope, a couple (Elizabeth Banks and David Denman) adopts a baby who came from the stars. While they attempt to raise the boy (Jackson A. Dunn) to use his powers for good, an evil begins to grow inside that he unleashes.
