Director Peter Sollett Hired To Bring ‘Minecraft’ To The Big Screen

It appears that the long-in-development “Minecraft” movie is moving ahead once again. This time, the project has a new director at the helm, and Warner Bros. is hoping the third time is a charm.

Variety is reporting that director Peter Sollett has signed on to direct the highly-anticipated video game adaptation. For those that don’t follow video games (and don’t have a child under the age of 12), “Minecraft” is a game that allows users to create basically anything they want in a fictional world that’s built on the style of older, pixelated games. There are some story elements that involve monsters and whatnot, but mainly the game is known for its world-building and creative outlets.

It’s unclear what a film version of the game will look like. One would venture a guess that we’re talking something along the lines of a “LEGO Movie”-esque look and feel, with the pixelated art being at the forefront. However, with Sollett’s history in live-action, this would lead us to believe that perhaps there’s a heavy live-action element that will be augmented by animation. We shall see.

Sollett is an interesting choice to helm the potential blockbuster. The filmmaker has three feature films under his belt, all firmly in the indie market, with “Raising Victor Vargas,” “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist,” and 2015’s “Freeheld,” which starred Julianne Moore, Ellen Page, and Steve Carell.

No word on any stars that are attached. Although, Variety says that the once-attached Steve Carell is no longer on board to lend his services. And Sollett’s hiring means that “It’s Always Sunny” creator-writer-star Rob McElhenney is officially no longer attached as the potential director.

We still don’t have a release date, but clearly, with the popularity of “Minecraft,” Warner Bros. is going to want to move this forward as quickly as humanly possible.
