Fox Developing Multi-Cultural Comedy ‘Adapted’ From ‘The Last O.G.’ Trio & Jeff Gaspin
Fox has put in development Adapted, a real-life-inspired multi-cultural single-camera comedy, from The Last O.G. co-executive producers Mary Fitzgerald, Arthur Harris and Angela Nissel, Jeff Gaspin and his Gaspin Media, Mark Kassen’s Like Minded Entertainment and 20th Century Fox TV.
Written by Fitzgerald, Harris and Nissel, who also will showrun, and based on a real-life story, Adapted follows 14-year-old Alex, who, after refusing to move from Las Vegas to Philadelphia so that his neglectful mother can re-marry yet again, convinces his African American neighbors to adopt him.
Fitzgerald, Harris and Nissel executive produce with Gaspin and Tony Sabistina for Gaspin Media, along with Kassen. Sarah Adina is co-executive producer, and Omar Dzlieri, who inspired the project, serves as a consultant. 20th Century Fox TV co-produces with Gaspin Media and Like Minded Entertainment.
Dzlieri is a 27-year old writer/director from Philadelphia, who was born to a Russian-Jewish immigrant single mother. Dzlieri moved a lot in his early childhood as his mother balanced raising three children and working multiple jobs. At age 10, Omar moved to Las Vegas and found the stability he always longed for when the Henrys, his next door neighbors, a loving black family, became Omar’s legal guardians after he moved in, and provided him with a thriving and nurturing environment and multi-cultural journey to adulthood.
Fitzgerald, Harris and Nissel are co-executive producers on TBS’ The Last O.G., starring Tracy Morgan and Tiffany Haddish. Fitzgerald has previously staffed on several series including Cougar Town and Lucky Louie. In addition to his work on The Last O.G., Harris recounts modern day fatherhood through humorous blogs and owns and operates a drug and alcohol rehab center. Nissel is a screenwriter, novelist, comedian and hip-hop goddess who authored the national bestseller The Broke Diaries, which is being developed for television.
Gaspin spent almost two decades at NBCU, exiting as chairman of NBC Universal TV Entertainment after the Comcast merger in 2011. He is an executive producer on LA’S Finest, the Spectrum series starring Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba, Netflix’s hip-hop-themed music competition series Rhythm & Flow, and To Tell The Truth for ABC. Gaspin and Gaspin Media, whose Scripted Television division is headed by Sabistina, recently inked a multi-year overall deal with AGC Television, the small-screen division of Stuart Ford’s indie content company AGC Studios.
Kassen is the Founder of Like Minded Entertainment, a Cross-Platform Entertainment and Technology Company primarily focusing on true stories, social causes, and science. Through feature films, documentaries, television, social media and branded entertainment, LME combines Hollywood’s traditional storytelling with communities seeking to connect to relevant and impactful issues. His producing credits include Chris Evans’ directorial debut Before We Go; Bernard and Doris, starring Ralph Fiennes and Susan Sarandon; Trigger Happy, starring Rosario Dawson; and Puncture, starring Evans, which Kassen also directed.
