Not Even Ezra Miller Fully Believes That ‘Fantastic Beasts 2’ Reveal Is True

Going into the weekend, fans knew that J.K. Rowling had some surprises in store in the new “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.” The ‘Harry Potter’ prequel/spin-off told the further adventures of Newt Scamander and Pals, as they continue their quest to stop the titular villain. It was also the first time that fans would be introduced to Jude Law’s Albus Dumbledore. However, what people probably never saw coming was the twist at the end. And even the actor at the center of the twist doesn’t know what to make of it.

**Spoilers Ahead for ‘Fantastic Beasts 2.’ You’ve been warned.**

At the end of ‘Fantastic Beasts 2,’ it is revealed that Credence, played by Ezra Miller in the film, is the long-lost younger brother of Albus Dumbledore. The character learns his “true” history in a discussion with Johnny Depp’s Grindelwald, as the villain explains that Credence is, in fact, Aurelius Dumbledore, the never-before-mentioned brother of the fan-favorite wizard.

Once the initial shock wore off on the reveal, ‘Harry Potter’ fans did what they do best — research and investigation. It was revealed, thanks in large part to Rowling’s incredible world-building and history of the Wizarding World, that the Credence reveal at the end of ‘Fantastic Beasts 2’ is dubious, at best. The facts just don’t line up. (For more in-depth analysis, just do a Google search, it’s all over the place.)

And when IndieWire spoke with Ezra Miller about the shocking revelation, it is revealed that the actor doesn’t necessarily believe the ending is fact.

“I guess the point of this film is probably don’t take anything that metaphorical Grindelwald says as gospel in general. But do we bring that forward, then apply it to the information he gives the Obscurial at the end of the film? Well, I don’t know, honestly. Maybe not,” Miller admits.

Instead of sending shockwaves through the fan community due to the reveal’s consequences, the Credence heritage twist actually has become a divisive part of the film’s reception. Many people are let down that Rowling, who penned the script, would build up to a reveal that is so clearly not true, leading people to become frustrated that the next film will have at least one really predictable “revelation.”

But even though he fully doesn’t believe it himself, Miller does think there’s precedent in the Wizarding World for this news to actually be true. “I think that, on the one hand, from a ‘Harry Potter’ canon perspective, there are reasons why Grindelwald would definitely know something like that, given his connection to Albus and that family,” Miller said. “And we know he had this history that involved Aberforth and Ariana. So it’s not impossible that there’s validity and truth to it.”

That being said, he added, “Is it impossible that Grindelwald is lying? Obviously also, no, it’s not impossible.”

Guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens when ‘Fantastic Beasts 3’ hits theaters sometime in 2020.
