Gael García Bernal To Star In New Showtime Immigration Thriller Series From Creator Jonás Cuarón
It appears that after less than a year away from TV, Emmy Award-winning actor Gael García Bernal is ready to return to the small screen, in a new Showtime thriller from creator Jonás Cuarón.
According to Deadline, the actor will star in the untitled series about an undocumented immigrant man who must go undercover as an immigration office to rescue his wife that has been detained by ICE. The man becomes the subject of a dangerous double life, as he attempts to help his wife but also protect his identity. The series is inspired by the upcoming book “Undocumented America” from journalist Karla Cornejo Villavicencio.

Bernal, as mentioned above, previously starred in the Emmy Award-winning Amazon drama “Mozart in the Jungle,” which was just canceled in April after four seasons. In addition to his small-screen work, Bernal is probably best known as the star of films like “Y Tu Mamá También,” “Babel,” “Museo,” and the massive animated Pixar film “Coco.” He’s currently in production of the next film from director Pablo Larraín, titled “Ema.”
As the name might suggest, Cuarón is the son of filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón but has made a name for himself in recent years. He co-wrote the Oscar-winning film “Gravity” alongside his father but is also known as the writer and director of the 2015 thriller “Desierto,” which also starred Bernal. That film premiered to good reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival and was Mexico’s entry in that year’s Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film but was not officially nominated.

There’s no premiere date set for the untitled immigration thriller, but with names like Cuarón and Bernal attached, it looks like Showtime has another great series on the horizon.
